Segment of Carcassonne's double ramparts and towers

Carcassonne’s iconic silhouette comes from two concentric belts of stone. Between them lies the lices, the service corridor you can walk today.

Walls 101: what you’re looking at

  • Outer wall: Later medieval work responding to new siege tactics.
  • Inner wall: Earlier line, higher in places, with resident access.
  • Towers: Round for deflection, square in earlier stretches.
  • Gate complexes: Layered traps before the final doors.

Best free loop (lices)

  • Start at Porte Narbonnaise, keep to the right to walk clockwise.
  • Pause at the north for views to the Montagne Noire.
  • Finish near Porte d'Aude for the river panorama.

Safety and etiquette

  • Keep to marked paths.
  • Don’t climb parapets or sit on narrow ledges.
  • Yield on stairs; they are tight and two‑way.

Carcassonne’s walls are a textbook you can walk. Read it slowly.
