Porte Narbonnaise gate flanked by towers of the Cité de Carcassonne

Welcome to one of Europe's most complete fortified towns. The Cité de Carcassonne is a living textbook of medieval defense — double ramparts, 52 towers, barbicans, and a castle within a castle.

The twin-towered main gate of Carcassonne

At a glance

  • Where: Hilltop on the right bank of the Aude, above the Pont Vieux.
  • Main gates: Porte Narbonnaise (east) and Porte d'Aude (west).
  • Time needed: 2–4 hours for the Cité, plus 60–90 minutes for ramparts.
  • Terrain: Cobblestones, inclines, occasional steps on the walls.

Tip: Start at the east gate early, exit at the west gate for the river and city views.

How to enter and which circuit to walk

There are two classic ways to enjoy the fortifications:

  1. Free exterior circuit between the double walls.
  2. Paid rampart walk managed with the castle ticket.

Free exterior circuit (family friendly)

  • Start: Just inside Porte Narbonnaise, follow the gap between walls clockwise.
  • Highlights: Arrow slits, murder holes, posterns, views towards the Montagne Noire.
  • Duration: 45–75 minutes at a relaxed pace.

Paid ramparts and castle walk

  • Ticket scope: Château Comtal + ramparts walkways.
  • Best sections: Northern and western curtains for river and Bastide views.
  • Safety: Low parapets in a few spots; keep small children close.

What to see (top highlights)

  • Château Comtal: The inner keep and museum collection.
  • Basilique Saint‑Nazaire: Gothic rose windows and Romanesque sculpture.
  • Barbican at Porte Narbonnaise: Layered defense before the gate.
  • Lices (between-walls): The defensive gap you can stroll.

Suggested route

  • Enter at Porte Narbonnaise.
  • Quick coffee on Place Marcou.
  • Castle and ramparts.
  • Cross to Porte d'Aude for sunset over the Aude.

When to go (crowds vs light)

Time Crowd Light Notes
Early morning Low Soft Best photos and empty lanes
Midday High Harsh Heat on stones; plan shade
Sunset Medium Golden Perfect from west walls
Night Low Atmospheric Lanterns, empty alleys, quiet

Note: Summer afternoons can be very hot. Carry water and plan shade breaks.

Essentials checklist

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Sun protection and water
  • Castle ticket booked in advance
  • Camera ready for towers and gates

Bottom line

Walk the gap between the walls for free context, then climb the paid ramparts for the full, cinematic sweep of Carcassonne.
